A Month of Thanks: How to Use Social Media To Spread Thankfulness

You might have seen people on social media posting comments regarding "A Month of Thanks." In case you don’t know much about it, the Month of Thanks trend encourages people to share something they're thankful for each day in November leading up to Thanksgiving. With many studies, including one from the University of Michigan, drawing a connection between frequency of Facebook use and a decline in overall happiness, the Month of Thanks trend stands as a way to promote gratitude and uplift one another.

The process of regularly focusing on the positive and celebrating with others in our community over positive experiences in their lives is something to be thankful for in and of itself. We'd all be much better off focusing on the things we have rather than the things we don't. While social media can often generate FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), a Month of Thanks allows social media users to move away from those fears—at least for a moment.

This is a refreshing trend in which brands can also take part to help humanize their businesses and demonstrate values. But how can brands best go about it?

For starters, use the month of November to highlight times your team has helped others out, and share what those efforts have done for your team. How does your company encourage employees to be active in the community through volunteering? Are employees thankful for new friendships resulting from volunteering? What lives have been positively impacted by your business and the people who work there? Are there any team members who have tackled difficult times with the support of other employees?

Customers appreciate seeing the lives behind the brand. Knowing that people at your company care and give back in some way can increase trust among consumers. Also, employees will likely be inspired by each other's stories when those stories are shared online.

What are you thankful for this month? At Spyglass Digital, we're thankful for the adventure of launching the company. We're thankful for great clients and fun projects to work on as we grow. And we're thankful for staff members who are talented, considerate, inspiring, and hard working.

Happy Thanksgiving!
